"GIMME HOPE JO'ANNA" is a well know reggae anti-apartheid dance hit from the 80's. The song was banned by the South African government when it was released, but this made the record even more popular! This must have seriously pissed off those boring 'officials' :) The government would ban music, books, tv shows, read your mail, listen in on your phone calls - and label anything they didn't like as being.... "Undesirable"
ha ha ha
Eddy Grant had a MEGA HIT in many ways with this song!
scores 10/10!
(+ a BIG x2 fingers up to those paronoid censorship officials!)
Cool song! I remember singing slightly different lyrics, though: "Gimme dope, Mandela gimme, dope, Mandela..."

being from your part of the planet i can totally understand completelty why this song was banned. And no wonder look at the state of Joe Anus Burg now -- aka Joanna ... Pretty predictable wasnt it and obviously right to ban the song..
