"Hi NRG Italo Disco Eurobeat inspired synthpop from Durban's own Mike Durandt, it follows the tried and tested formula of potent synths and sultry, effeminate vocals over uptempo rhythms that conjure images of sweaty aerobics studios and suburban discos. It's either generic or timeless, depending on your memories of the era. This is the original South African 12'' Maxi release, with the Italo Disco sleaze bootleg 12'' mix, + both mixes (sides A & B) from the original S.A. 7'' single release.  Later also released in Canada on Power Records."

Fever - Standing In The Shadows Of Love (12'' Mix) 7.06 (1978) Patrick Joseph Cowley (October 19, 1950 – November 12, 1982) was an American disco and Hi-NRG dance music composer and recording artist. Along with Giorgio Moroder, he often is credited as a pioneer of electronic dance music. During his teenage years, Cowley became a successful drummer with local amateur bands before attending Niagara University and later the University at Buffalo to study English. In 1971, at the age of 21, Cowley moved to San Francisco to attend the City College of San Francisco (CCSF) where he studied music, specifically the use of synthesizers. Cowley met San Francisco-based musician Sylvester in 1978. Sylvester had asked Cowley to join his studio band after hearing some of his early synthesizer recordings. He played synthesizer on Sylvester's 1978 album Step II which included the hits "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" and "Dance (Disco Heat)". In addition, he wrote "Stars" and "I Need Somebody to Love Tonight" from his 1979 album Stars. Cowley also joined Sylvester's live band and joined him on several world tours. Cowley's own hits included "Menergy" in 1981, a frank celebration of the gay club scene, and "Megatron Man", which hit #1 and #2 respectively on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in 1981. That same year, Patrick Cowley was celebrated at the Menergy parties at The EndUp in San Francisco. He also wrote and produced the dance single "Right on Target" for San Francisco artist Paul Parker, which reached #1 on the Billboard dance chart in 1982. "Do Ya Wanna Funk", a collaboration with Sylvester, made #4 on the Billboard dance chart that same year. Cowley also did a 15'45" long remix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love", which is now a collector's item. Mind Warp, his final album, was composed as he felt the increasing effects of HIV infection, and its songs reflect his increasing detachment from conventional reality as the disease progressed. During a world tour with Sylvester in late 1981, Cowley complained of feeling increasingly unwell. Upon returning to the United States, he visited a doctor who diagnosed food poisoning. Weeks later, with his condition only worsening, doctors again failed to identify what was wrong with him. At this early stage in the history of the HIV and AIDS, misdiagnosis was common and so Cowley, who was gay, was discharged from the hospital (in 1982) after doctors could do nothing more for him. Cowley died at his home in the Castro District neighbourhood in San Francisco on November 12, 1982. He was 32 years old, an early victim of AIDS. A couple of tracks were completed for a planned Sarah Dash album that year, which was cut short by Cowley's death. Despite never fully achieving mainstream commercial success, Cowley is nevertheless regarded as a pioneer of early electronic music and the creator of Hi-NRG, an uptempo strain of disco. Various 1980s artists such as Pet Shop Boys and New Order have cited his influence as a producer. Cowley has been described as "a musical pioneer whose achievements rippled throughout queer culture and beyond into the disco mainstream". Since the 2010s, Cowley's profile has risen as "listeners and scholars excavate disco's intersection with gay liberation." Amid the accompanying emergence of nu-disco in the late 2000s and early 2010s, profiles of Cowley across social media and other high-profile outlets have contributed to a resurgence of interest in his work.

The Real Background Story:

ITALO DISCO "SLEAZE":

Background Soundtrack Music in 80s XXX Adult Videos 📼

(How Italo Disco sometimes ended up, in American hardcore 80s porn video soundtracks)

Hardly ever discussed, but Italo Disco Instrumental / Dub mixes were featured pretty often in USA/Canadian 80s adult video films.

Home Video (Betamax / VHS) was introduced in North America in the late 70s.   This new home technology quickly created a HUGE market for home adult films sold on video cassettes.

The quickest, cheapest and most profitable practice was for XXX film studios to use existing 70s "loops" 🎞️ cinema porn films and make them available on home video for sale. 📼

Most of the 70s "loops" porn films had no sound.  Film producers needed many hundreds of hours of background instrumentals for the adult home video releases.

Nightclub DJs were already playing slowed down ITALO SLEAZE instrumental sets, mostly early morning sets, played for a few hours, before closing time.

Porn Studios would commission DJs to make reel to reel mixes, with many hours of original "unknown" instrumental dub tunes.   Electronic sounding Italo Disco instrumentals worked well, as made the old 70s "loops" adult films seem much more modern.   📼

Between 1980 to 1984 this practice was extremely common.   Hi-NRG disco instrumental dub mixes were used too, but the sleazy sounding (and mostly unknown) Italo instrumentals were most popular.

These American and Canadian XXX Video productions 📼 would travel around the world, via sales and piracy.

Sometimes, for music lovers, more legendary for having a cool killer "unknown italo dub mix" soundtrack than for the onscreen action!

RETRO DISCO Hi-NRG 🚀 http://retrodisco-hi-nrg.blogspot.com 🖭 https://www.mixcloud.com/retro-nrg/ Remembering Bill Grainger: ✨ (R.I.P)
🔺 Bill Grainger is known for bringing HI NRG music to Scotland through his legendary Fire Island Club in Edinburgh in the 1980’s and his long running HI NRG show on Radio Clyde (Glasgow & Central Scotland) during the same period. He has worked with Simon Cowell, Eartha Kitt, Evelyn Thomas, Village People, Hazell Dean, Sinitta and many more. he also worked with Record Shack Records and managed Seventh Avenue who later became Big Fun (best remembered for their hit single Blame It On The Boogie). He also toured with The Hitman & Her show with Pete Waterman, Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan. He then went on to launch CLUBSCENE RECORDS and ACADEMY STREET RECORDS.
🔺 Divine (performer) 👠 Artist info: ✨ (R.I.P)
Harris Glenn Milstead (October 19, 1945 – March 7, 1988), better known by his stage name Divine, was an American actor, singer, and drag queen. Closely associated with the independent filmmaker John Waters, Divine was a character actor, usually performing female roles in cinematic and theatrical productions, and adopted a female drag persona for his music career. After starring as the lead role in Waters' next film, Female Trouble (1974), Divine moved on to theatre, appearing in several avant-garde performances alongside San Francisco drag collective, The Cockettes. He followed this with a performance in Tom Eyen's play Women Behind Bars and its sequel, The Neon Woman. Continuing his cinematic work, he starred in two more of Waters' films, Polyester (1981) and Hairspray (1988), the latter of which represented his breakthrough into mainstream cinema and for which he was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male. Independent of Waters, he also appeared in a number of other films, such as Lust in the Dust (1985) and Trouble in Mind (1985), seeking to diversify his repertoire by playing male roles. In 1981, Divine embarked on a career in the disco industry by producing a number of Hi-NRG tracks, most of which were written by Bobby Orlando. He achieved international chart success with hits like "You Think You're a Man", "I'm So Beautiful", and "Walk Like a Man", all of which were performed in drag. Having struggled with obesity throughout his life, he died from cardiomegaly, shortly after the release of Hairspray. Described by People magazine as the "Drag Queen of the Century", Divine has remained a cult figure, particularly within the LGBT community, and has provided the inspiration for fictional characters, artworks, and songs. Various books and documentary films devoted to his life have also been produced, including Divine Trash (1998) and I Am Divine (2013).
