PEOPLE LIKE US - Fighting For Our Lives (12'' Maxi) 1987 hi-nrg eurobeat italo disco electro passion 80s "Out-Of-Print" WAV HQ Format


South African Hi-NRG act around Paul Crossley and Terry Owen that formed out of the ashes of Shiraz. "Fighting For Our Lives" was first recorded in 1984 with male vocalist Marshall Harmse (as Shiraz) who had a heavy non English accent.  Passion records UK wanted a more English sounding vocalist on the tracks Paul & Terry produced.

Female vocalist Cindy Dickinson was recruited and the project became PEOPLE LIKE US.
With the additional vocal talents of Cindy Dickinson and teaming up with top SA producer Hilton Rosenthal, PEOPLE LIKE US, achieved a surprising measure of success around the world in the mid-80's with songs "Deliverance" and "Midnight Lover".

"Fighting For Our Lives" is a song written about having HIV/AIDS during the 80s, with no effective treatments, fighting to survive a new virus, plus widespread fear, heavy stigma, and rejection associated with having AIDS.

The song was written by lead group member and the songs producer, Paul Crossley who was diagnosed with HIV in the early 80s.

The slogan "Fighting For Our Lives" was most often seen on banners at AIDS marches/protests in the mid 80s.


Paul Crossley self produced "Fighting For Our Lives" in 1987, releasing it as People Like Us (feat Cindy Dickinson) on lead vocals.

It was licenced to & released worldwide by Passion Records UK
[note: to the left side on the 12'' cover, in black, is an abstract side image of Paul Crossley, unusual as no pictures of Paul or Terry ever appear on their releases]

After Paul Crossley's death in 1989, Terry Owen briefly teamed up with Robin Hogarth and recruited vocalist Angie Gold but the dance music had evolved into techno/house/rave, and releases failed to repeat the same performance.

Miquel Brown - Born in Montreal, February 8, 1949. Her name is pronounced Michael, fuelling an urban legend about her gender.
Raised in Vancouver, Canada, and later Washington D.C. where she became a teenage mum of twins at the age of just 14, one of the twins Sinitta becoming a future pop star herself in the 80s. Miquel moved to London in 1973, mostly being into theatre. She was brought to prominence in music when she recorded her first album "Symphony Of Love" with producer Alan Hawkshaw in 1978. She resurged in 1983 with "So Many Men, So Little Time" (#1 in France and Mexico), produced by Ian Levine, this was followed by other hits like "He's A Saint, He's A Sinner" and "Close To Perfection" (1985). She was a short-time member of The Three Degrees in 1985, substituting Helen Scott who was pregnant at the time.

Brown continued to release a few singles in the 90s, the last one being a cover of Pet Shop Boys' "It's A Sin", 1997, but has primarily focused on acting.

LANA PELLAY aka Alan "Al" Pillay also known as "Al Pillay" (born 22 August 1959), the star of Eat the Rich is a person of many names and two genders, starring in The Comic Strip Presents as Alan Pellay playing Himself in Gino (Episode 10) as Alana Pellay playing Herself in "The Bullshitters" (Episode 13) and, finally, as Lana Pellay playing Mary in the feature movie, The Supergrass, and as a solo disco singing artist

She metamorphosed into a disco diva as the hormone-popping transsexual Lana Pellay, dressed in costumes by her close friend Leigh Bowery and with a top 40 single in Australia and New Zealand with "Pistol In My Pocket". She also accompanied Gary Clail on his 1991 hit "Human Nature", singing the couplet "Let the carnival begin... Every pleasure, every sin!"
