Fern Kinney is an American R&B and disco singer, who is best remembered for her releases, "Groove Me" and "Together We Are Beautiful".
Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Kinney began singing in the late 1960s, and joined the vocal group, The Poppies, replacing their former singer, Patsy McClune. Kinney remained in the group with Dorothy Moore and Rosemary Taylor for about two years, and also released a solo single, "Your Love's Not Reliable", during this time, however it was not a success.
In the early 1970s she began working as a session musician and backing vocalist. Among the songs she sang on were King Floyd's "Groove Me", and her former "Poppie" bandmate Dorothy Moore's 1976 Top 10 single, "Misty Blue".
By then having settled as a housewife, Kinney in 1979 decided to attempt a comeback, and she recorded her own version of "Groove Me", but changed the rhythm on the song to turn it into a disco dance track. The song reached number 6 on the Billboard dance chart. Her next single "Together We Are Beautiful", released in 1980 was another disco song, but with a slower and more sultry beat. It had been recorded by the British vocalist, Steve Allan, eighteen months earlier. It failed to chart in the United States, but reached number one in the United Kingdom.
Kinney's subsequent releases attempted to continue in the disco style, however by this time the disco fad had reached its peak and Kinney was unable to repeat her success. By 1983 she had returned to her earlier career as a backing vocalist.

Kinney is sometimes regarded as a one hit wonder.

In 2013 "Together We Are Beautiful" was used in UK TV Commercial for EDF Energy

PEOPLE LIKE US feat Cindy Dickinson "DELIVERANCE" (Album+ bonus tracks) 1987 Hi-NRG Eurobeat 80's Italo Disco Classic

PEOPLE LIKE US is a South African studio group formed in the mid 80's by musical producer Paul Crossley and song writer Terry Owen in Johannesburg.
One night, while visiting the famous Johannesburg night-club Bella Napoli's, they heard the raspy and powerful vocals of Cindy Dickinson performing on stage and they knew they had found the voice they were looking for. They soon recorded several songs in the studio with Cindy, and released their first single 'Midnight Lover' under the watchful eye of legendary music executive Hilton Rosenthal (Hilton would later produce the world famous album 'Graceland' for Paul Simon). 'Midnight Lover' received a good response from DJ’s on the club scene and opened the door for further releases. Then in 1987 their song 'Deliverance' was released. This would be the song to make them well known in the clubs of Europe and all over the world...
In 1987 the debut album was released titled 'Deliverance' and featured further tracks including 'Hiroshima', 'Restless Hearts' and 'Reincarnation (Coming back for love)', 'Midnight Lover' and 'Fighting For Our Lives'.
Enquiries about ‘People Like Us’ came from all over the world and a tour of the UK was launched. Then disaster struck when Paul Crossley fell gravely ill with Aids at the height of their popularity. Paul Crossley died on 6 August 1989. His death had serious repercussions for ‘People Like Us’ as Paul Crossley was seen as the main driving force of the band and this dampened the future progression of the group. During that period leading up to Crossley’s death the situation between Cindy, Terry and Paul soured and Cindy decided not to be involved with future albums. Cindy also fell pregnant with her son Danny and performing and recording would take a back burner for the next couple of years...
During 1988 Terry Owen teamed up with another South African musical mastermind Robin Hogarth for the work on the next album. (Hogarth would go on to win two Grammy Awards for his producing work in 2007 and 2008). Angie Gold who was known for her hit ‘Eat You Up’ then became the new voice of ‘People Like Us’ and recorded songs including 'Resurrection' and ‘Two To Tango’. She also recorded the ballad ‘Prayer For You’ which was originally co-written by Cindy Dickinson.
The later work of 'People Like Us' could not live up to the original success of 'Deliverance' and some might speculate it was because of the untimely death of Paul Crossley or the departure of Cindy Dickinson. Another reason might be the rapid change in dance music during that time especially in Europe from a Hi-NRG and Eurodisco driven sound to the more American influenced House music style that would soon concur the dance music world.
