"Via Afrika erupted on to the South African music scene in the early 1980s.

During 1982 and 1983, Kensington Mansions, an apartment block on Noord Street in central Johannesburg, became the musical and spiritual home of Via Afrika – René Veldsman, Lukas Crouse and Michele Rowe. It was here that René, Lukas and Michele rehearsed, ideated and generally experimented with style and art in their quest to create a sound that would remain distinctly fresh, original and indisputably Via Afrikan. It was here, too, that this, the first album, was written and planned for studio production.

Looking back, there is little doubting that Via Afrika was uniquely outstanding in many aspects. Viewing René, Lukas and Michele beyond their hypnotic music, their tantalising costumes and bodily adornments and their hedonistic and, sometimes, erotic dance routines, there was that special otherworldliness about them. Asked about the inspiration behind the band's songwriting, René says
" … A glamorous protest against government policy, homophobia, the constraints on freedom of expression and, generally, the rules in place during the apartheid years. We wanted our music to be a visual experience of textures, cultures and language – a celebration of the wonders of being African and the realisation of this privilege.
"Our work was ahead of its time, but in later years we were recognised for our work with a United Nations award presented by Beyers Naude in New York City. Our style of music was strictly South African – no boundaries, just a unique sound that grew from a free-thinking group of musicians and artists."
Our first album, Via Afrika, was the most pirated music around at that time," says René. "We took this as a compliment. We were not money-mad – we liked the stuff and needed it for the equipment, sound, clothes and the fun it bought us. We didn't make much money out of record sales – maybe five, six or seven grand."

ROFO "The Album" (1988) Italo Disco Hi-Nrg 80's Eurobeat "Hard-To-Find" RARE!

-
"Rofo is an italo-disco project formed by Fonny de Wulf in the early eighties. Along with Ronny Verrept, they produced two songs, "Watch Out (Here They Come" and "Flashlight on a Disconight", the latter a big hit in 1983 when released all around Europe. But soon after, Ronny and the lead vocalist (only known as 'Peter') left the band. After their departure, de Wulf began searching for a new vocalist, and found John Sauli. In 1984, Rofo released another single, "You Got to Move it On", and "I Want You" the following year, to great success. In 1987, Rofo offered another single "Beach Love", but did not match the success of previous singles. Although this has not been proven, it has been speculated[by whom?] that Sauli left the band mid-way 1987. After he supposedly left the band, de Wulf composed an instrumental track "Rofo's Theme", which proved to be his most successful single. Not only a big hit around Europe, but its success allowed it to be released in other countries, including the U.K., the United States and Australia. An album was released in 1988, featuring four new songs and remixes of previous tracks. In 1990, a sequel single to "Rofo's Theme" was released, but proved to be Rofo's penultimate single."

05. Laban - It's A Fantasy [B-Side] Love In Siberia (2.58) 1986
-
"Laban was a 1980s Synthpop duo consisting of Lecia Jønsson and Ivan Pedersen. Both members were born in Denmark and originally sang in Danish, before moving onto English language releases. They went on to limited international success with the releases of two albums, as well as singles such as "Love In Siberia" and "Caught By Surprise".
The duo formed in 1982, and recorded the song "Hvor Ska' Vi Sove I Nat?" ("Where Should We Sleep Tonight?") in 1982, a track original written by the Italian pop music group Ricchi e Poveri, known as "Sarà perche ti amo". A manager called Cai Leitner heard the song, and two days later it was released as a single. In 1986 they released "Love In Siberia" which spent several weeks in both the US and UK Top 100, and which launched the pair to international success. It resulted in an LP called "Caught By Surprise", in addition to a single of the same name."

ZLAD! "Elektronik Supersonik" Euro Italo Disco Retro Mega Hit 80's Eurobeat Eurotrash Synthpop! RARE! "Out-Of-Print" classic! :)

-
"Elektronik Supersonik" is a kitschy, over-the-top combination of Italo disco and Synthpop, described as “a melodic fusion combining hot disco rhythms with cold war rhetoric”. Zlad! is featured in a mullet, bushy mustache, and silver spacesuit and is supported by a female keytarist and background vocalist with pink hair. His lyrics are often in spoken word or badly sung, not to mention full of grammatical errors, reversed semantic units, and meta-references to thick Slavic accents. For example the song opens with: "Hey baby, wake up from your asleep. We have arrived onto the future and the whole world is become elektronik, supersonik." It also carries a heavy sexual undertone.
"Elektronik Supersonik" was claimed to have been Molvania's entry into the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest. However, Vladcik was arrested at Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport and immediately deported for "recreational drug" usage. Upon his return, Vladcik apologised to everyone in Molvania for letting them down, especially his family, his friends and his dealer.

"Scores an 11 out of 10!"
