"Read My Lips" is a song written and performed by Scottish singer-songwriter Jimmy Somerville, from his 1989 album Read My Lips, formerly of the bands Bronski Beat and The Communards.
Every other Friday is Hi-NRG night at the Patrick Miller club in Colonia Roma, Mexico City. The night celebrates a type of disco with an electronic sound and a high-speed beat that was popular worldwide in the 80's. Although the form's worldwide popularity has ebbed, in Mexico City it is still alive, and its fans continue dancing to it in an almost religious way.
In 1983 Robeto Devesa, a Mexican DJ better known as Patrick Miller, started organizing parties in downtown Mexico City's Journalists Club. He imported the latest hits before anyone else, and the parties became mythical. Patrick turned into a character and a legend, adored by fans who danced weekly to the Hi-NRG rhythms; and his name became synonymous with epic raves. This is why Patrick Miller's followers, who call each other Patricios, have managed to keep this style of music alive, despite its being consider old fashioned in the countries in which it originated.
In the early 90's, Devesa decided to search for a permanent home to foster his sounds, lights, and lasers. Thus he founded the Patrick Miller club, which opens its doors every Friday in Colonia Roma to let parishioners dance like the gods.
We went with Jorge, better known as Padawan, to the house where he meets with his buddies—other members of the Banda Loca—before heading to their favorite club. Then we travelled with them to the Patrick Miller club, to better understand what makes Hi-NRG nights way more than just a regular disco party.
BACCARA is a female vocal duo formed in 1977 by Spanish artists Mayte Mateos (7 February 1951, Logroño) and MarÃa Mendiola (4 April 1952, Madrid). The pair rapidly achieved international success with their debut single "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie", which reached number one across much of Europe and is one of the best-selling singles of all time. A successful follow-up single ("Sorry, I'm a Lady") and European tour led to a number of album releases, numerous television appearances and the duo's selection to represent Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest 1978.
Despite a substantial following in Spain, Germany and Japan, by 1981 the duo's distinctive blend of disco, pop and Spanish folk music was no longer fashionable, and by 1983 Mayte Mateos and MarÃa Mendiola were both working on solo projects. Achieving little success as solo artists, the two formed duos of their own: separate incarnations of the original Baccara appeared during the middle of the decade, with Mendiola fronting New Baccara and Mateos keeping the duo's original name. During the 1990s New Baccara was renamed back to Baccara; as a consequence both Mateos and Mendiola now head different duos with the same name. Both principals have subsequently had prolonged but separate legacy careers based on nostalgia and their earlier fame.
Mendiola's Baccara has seen more international recognition, releasing a string of Hi-NRG club hits such as "Fantasy Boy" and "Touch Me" in the late 1980s and the later UK club hit "Wind Beneath My Wings". Mateos' Baccara has released few new recordings, but has remained in demand for television and live appearances in countries such as Spain and Germany where the original Baccara developed a loyal fan base, performing the duo's back-catalogue and modernised versions of traditional Spanish songs.
NEW BACCARA is a disco group who had some hits in the 80's with the singles "Call Me Up", "Fantasy Boy" and "Touch Me". The super group worked with euro-disco producer Luis Rodriguez (Modern Talking, Creative Connection ect.), together with the songwriter and producer Reinhardt Frantz (Sweet Connection, Casablanca, Pepper Girls). Reihardt Franzt with Ian Cussick and Lee Smith wrote songs for Maria Mendiola (ex Baccara) and Maryse Peres. Maria was the writer of the spanish lyrics of the song Talisman (B side and spanish version of Call Me Up). Today their older records are rarities. These days, as well as several times in the past, the group has droped the "New" and chosen to be known simply as Baccara. The most recent things released by them are the 2002 remixes of "Wind Beneath My Wings" & the 2005 remixes of their re-recording of "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie".
